If there are an ethnic people so persecuted and slaughtered with impunity other than Palestinians, it has to be the Rohingya. To understand why, go back to the early 15th century at the start of a historical three waves of migration into what is now Myanmar. In the first wave, King Narameikhla, Arakan’s Buddhist ruler, was deposed in 1406 by a rival Burmese kingdom, entering a 24-year exile in the neighbouring Bengal Sultanate. Narameikhla returned in 1430, aided by Sultan Gaur’s military forces, to regain his throne and formed a hybrid Buddhist-Muslim rule that lasted almost 400 years. Muslim traders and scholars who followed Narameikhla established a dominant presence.
