Malaysia has big plans for the halal industry. We have, for the longest time, wanted to make the country the world’s halal hub. Last year, the government announced its intention to take the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) halal certification global, as part of these plans. The actions of the so-called “meat cartel”, therefore, is a major setback for Malaysia. The cartel has been in existence for 40 years, but we are only just learning about it, and, little by little, we are finding out just how bad the situation is.
