A group of Filipino lawmakers led by Edcel Lagman challenged on Wednesday the constitutionality of President Rodrigo Duterte’s martial law extension before the Supreme Court. The group, also known as the “magnificent seven”, sought a restraining order “before the effectivity on January 1, 2017 of the challenged re-extension” of martial law. Duterte had declared martial law in Mindanao on May 23 through Proclamation No. 216 after government troops clashed with terrorists from the Maute Group and Abu Sayyaf Group in Marawi City. Duterte’s approval rating rebounded sharply in the final quarter of the year, after falling in the previous quarter, a survey released Friday by local pollster Social Weather Stations found.
