Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet announced on Sunday evening that the Kingdom will cease all fuel and gas imports from Thailand starting at midnight, in a dramatic escalation of ongoing tensions between the two neighboring nations. “Starting from midnight tonight, all fuel and gas imports from Thailand will be halted,” Mr Hun Manet wrote in a statement posted on his official social media channels. He added that Cambodia has sufficient capacity to source fuel and gas from other countries to meet domestic demand. “Fuel supply companies in Cambodia are able to import sufficiently from other sources to meet domestic fuel and gas demands within the country,” the post said. The announcement follows a series of diplomatic and economic rifts between Phnom Penh and Bangkok, including recent accusations from Thai officials over cybercrime operations allegedly based in Cambodia and the abrupt closure of a key border checkpoint by the Thai military earlier this week — a move that prompted Cambodia to respond in kind by permanently sealing the same crossing.
