Indonesia is battling a wave of fake news and online hate speech ahead of presidential elections in 2019, as a string of arrests underscore fears it could crack open social and religious fault lines in the world’s largest Muslim-majority country. Authorities have revealed the inner workings of a self-proclaimed cyber-jihadist network known as the Muslim Cyber Army (MCA). The network is accused of spreading fake news and hate speech to inflame religious and ethnic schisms. In August, the Indonesian police arrested members of a different syndicate called Saracen for fomenting intolerance and spreading fake news over the internet.
