Indonesians could be jailed for criticising national politicians under a new law that came into force on Thursday, in what critics slammed as a major step back for the world’s third-biggest democracy. Constitutional Law expert Refly Harun suggests President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) not issue the regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) to annul the draconian law. Refly argued if the president often makes the Perppu, it will create executive tyranny on Jokowi administration. Groups like Indonesia Corruption Watch and the Association for Elections and Democracy have launched an online campaign to fight the measures. The campaign has gathered more than 170,000 signatures. But the amendments can only be overturned by a Constitutional Court ruling.
