Security forces fighting pro-Islamic State (IS) militant groups in the troubled Mindanao island now have another battle on their hands, with the resurgence of the New People’s Army (NPA) – the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), Channel News Asia reports. Earlier this month, The Daily Inquirer quoted Brig. Gen. Antonio Parlade Jr. saying that NPA was trying to recruit students at 18 campuses in the country’s capital, including those of the prestigious University of the Philippines, De La Salle University, and Ateneo University. Meanwhile, five alleged communist rebels, including a peace talks consultant, believed to be involved in the plot to oust President Duterte, were arrested Monday afternoon, according to the military.
