Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday said he is confident that the communist insurgency will be over by next year, citing continuing surrender of New People’s Army rebels in various parts of the country as his reason, ABS-CBN News reports. The president said last month that he was prepared to order the use of bombs against the insurgents if they turn violent. He also threatened to strip the authority of regional leaders if they provide resources to communist rebels. The resumption of peace negotiations between the government and communist factions in the country was supposed to take place in Oslo, Norway, in June, but Duterte called it off to give way to public consultations and a review of existing agreements.
