The Philippine government has revoked the operating licence of leading news website Rappler, officials said Monday in a ruling denounced by President Rodrigo Duterte’s critics as another blow to press freedom. Rappler, which usually features news stories against the Duterte administration, admitted that it did not anticipate that Securities and Exchange Commission would come up with a decision against its company, saying that it had “acted in good faith and adhered to the best standards in a fast-evolving business environment.” Malacañang on Monday said the SEC decision was triggered by the country’s anti-dummy law, and was not an attack on press freedom.
