Indonesian authorities are struggling to contain a months-long outbreak of measles in easternmost Papua province that has killed dozens of children. Thirty-six victims died in Pulau Tiga sub-district and 22 died in Agats, the main town and capital of Asmat district. Besides the measles outbreak, malnutrition cases have also raised red flags. Due to its hard terrains and the difficulties of reaching remote areas, it was reported last year that 38 residents in Semenage district, Yahukimo, have died during the May-August period due to sickness and poor access to healthcare services.
