Thailand’s deputy prime minister Prawit Wongsuwan told reporters on Monday that the planned general election for 2019 will be carried out as planned, amid concerns from government critics and the opposition that it could be pushed back, Reuters reports. Ahead of the election, which must be held by May, Thailand’s military government has cleared the way for political parties to resume activities, more than four years after a coup. But they can’t campaign or organize street gatherings, according to Al-Jazeera. Human Rights Watch calls on the military junta to lift all restrictions on political activity in order to ensure full return of democratic freedom to the Thai people and ensure political parties can participate fully in the process.
