The Congress of the Philippines is rushing the approval of a new law that could give President Rodrigo Duterte wide-ranging powers similar to those of his idol, the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, South China Morning Post reports. The law will see the death penalty restored, torture allowed, Filipinos jailed for social media posting, and suspected terrorists arrested without warrants and detained 30 days without charge. The proposals come amid claims by the Duterte administration last month that the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines has been plotting a coup called “Red October” to overthrow the president. The Communist Party of the Philippines has denied the conspiracy to oust Duterte, calling it a government fiction, a sign of increasingly insecure leader amid an economic crisis that is facing the country.
