The Malaysian government is moving to curb racial and religious hatred in the country amid the growing number of such cases, particularly on social media. Religious Affairs Minister Mujahid Yusof Rawa told parliament on Tuesday said a Bill would be tabled “soon”, as quoted by The Straits Times. Earlier this month, King Sultan Muhammad V called for racial unity at the opening of the country’s first Parliament session since Pakatan Harapan’s political coalition secured a stunning electoral victory on May 9. Malaysia is certainly no stranger to troubling social tension. In 1969, racial conflict escalated into riots after state economic policy was seen as bestowing key privileges on the predominant ethnic Malays. The country enjoyed relative harmony over the past two decades, but it’s been a fragile peace nevertheless, writes The Nation in its editorial.
