The Indonesian government has asked thousands who had been evacuated under threat of a Mount Agung eruption, to return home. A statement by the Indonesian National Agency for Disaster Management says that more than half the 140,000 Balinese who have fled to shelters had no need to evacuate as their homes are not under threat from volcanic eruption. Separately, evidence has emerged on social media of three Balinese Hindu priests who ventured to the peak of Mount Agung ahead of its expected eruption after being ‘told by the dieties’ to make offerings to appease the smouldering volcano. Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport has been operating normally since the alert status for the volcano was raised to the highest level on Friday, but a significant eruption would force its closure.
