The de-facto leader of Malaysia’s People’s Justice Party (PKR), Anwar Ibrahim, has denied rumors about a possible cooperation between his party and the United Malay National Organization. He made his stand clear that UMNO could play an effective role as the opposition, the New Straits Times reports. In an interview with Nikkei Asian Review, the 71-year-old former deputy prime minister said the Pakatan Harapan coalition, to which his party belongs, would continue to pursue plans for institutional reforms, including the review of affirmative action for bumiputra. Anwar was in Jakarta on Thursday, meeting President Joko Widodo for the first time after being voted as PKR president last month. He is expected to take over as prime minister when Mahathir Mohamad steps down.
