Thailand is rolling out plans to legalize medical marijuana, an official said on Wednesday, as the country hopes to cash in on a multibillion-dollar industry with a product its supporters hail as some of the world’s best, Agence-Frace Presse reports. Cannabis was made illegal in the country as early as 1935. Trafficking, possession, cultivation, and transport of 10 kilos or less is punishable by 5 years in prison and a substantial fine. Anything exceeding this could net as many as 15 years in prison. Professor Dr Thiravat Hema-chudha, a senior medical lecturer at Chulalongkorn University, is among many experts who have also been calling on Thailand to act quickly on the policy shift, pointing out that Britain took just six weeks to effectively legalize marijuana for medical use.
