Thailand’s Pollution Control Department (PCD) has set a target of eradicating plastic cap seals on drinking water bottles by the end of this year. A cap seal is the small plastic strip attached to the cap that must be peeled off before the bottle can be opened. Studies have found that bottles without them pose no greater risk to hygiene. Thailand is one of the top five ocean plastic polluters, but attitudes toward trash cleanup and inadequate waste-management systems haven’t kept pace with an explosion in plastic use, reports News Deeply. Thailand plans to gradually eradicate plastic waste at sea by 80 million to 160 million kilograms a year by 2021. The government is also campaigning to boost public awareness so people would separate trash at home for proper disposal.
