Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam have been selected as the first destination for the United Nations Peacekeeping training course in the Southeast Asian region, VN Express reports. The United Nations announced the decision after making an evaluation that facilities in the country meet international standards. In April, ASEAN and the UN agreed to strengthen engagements under the first ASEAN-UN Plan of Action (2016-2020), including cooperation in peace and security, addressing transnational political-security challenges, counter-terrorism and preventing violent extremism, as well as human rights and humanitarian developments. Malaysia has proposed the setting up of an Asean Peacekeeping Force to deal with security issues in the region, an idea that would become reality if it receives support from the UN.
