Philippine police will return to the front lines of President Rodrigo Duterte’s drug war, his spokesman said Tuesday, less than two months after they were demoted in response to rising opposition to the crackdown. Responding to mounting criticism, Duterte in October ordered police to end all operations in his deadly war on drugs after a 15-month campaign in which officers have killed thousands. Amnesty International previously said that the shift from the police to the country’s anti-drugs agency could be a “short-term” public relations move meant to appease the growing opposition to it.
