Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak, took a jab at his predecessor Mahathir Mohammad by telling investors that the government would never again peg the ringgit currency against the US dollar. In 1998, Dr Mahathir, as prime minister, pegged the ringgit at 3.8 to the US dollar during the Asian financial crisis after claiming that the currency was attacked by currency traders. It caused the currency to lose half its value. Also on Tuesday, at a news conference in Putrajaya, Mahathir called on voters not to fall for a “ploy” by Malaysia’s largest ruling party by spoiling their votes or boycotting the election.
