The Sultan of Brunei has made a complaint of defamation to the Indonesian police about an Instagram account post that criticized the wealthy autocratic leader of Southeast Asia’s smallest nation. The post in question is no longer available online, but it was described by Jakarta police spokesman Argo Yuwono as containing photos of Sultan Bolkiah with accompanying text that was thought to be defamatory. Indonesia’s controversial Information and Electronic Transactions Act (UU ITE), which criminalizes online defamation, has often been criticized by those who think it is used as a tool by elites to silence their critics.
