Malaysia and Singapore signed an agreement on Wednesday to defer the planned high-speed rail (HSR) link between the two countries until 2020. The supplementary agreement was signed between Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali and Singapore Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan, Free Malaysia Today reports. Malaysia will pay RM45 million (US$10.8 million) as abortive costs to Singapore for deferring the High Speed Rail project until May 2020 said Azmin Ali. According to Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng, the government’s decision to scrap the project was not only due to the high price tag of building it, but also the steep cost burden to maintain the 350km link in the longer term.
