Malaysians as young as 18 years old may get to vote in the next general elections, said youth and sports minister Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman on Monday, the Straits Times reports, quoting the Malay Mail. The legal voting age in Malaysia is 21. In Malaysia’s 14th general election, 41 per cent of the country’s 14.9 million eligible voters were under 40 years old, and 1.6 million or about 10 per cent of the electorate were first-time voters. These groups were credited by Pakatan Harapan for helping them to take power, Channel News Asia reports. Where political culture traditionally favours seniority and age, the Pakatan Harapan political coalition has demonstrated efforts to groom and expose younger politicians, writes Tricia Yeoh of the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs.
