The city council of Pariaman in West Sumatra, Indonesia, has approved a bylaw to fine gay or transgender people up to 1 million rupiah ($70) for behavior that could “disturb public order” or be considered immoral, Reuters reported on Monday, quoting the city’s deputy mayor.  The country of 260 million is in the grip of a moral panic, with critics saying the vulnerable LGBT minority is being used as a political punching bag in the run-up to 2019 elections, Eyewitness News reports. Hardline rhetoric and a string of arrests have raised fears among the community. In October, social media went abuzz with #UninstallGoJek after the homegrown ride-hailing company Gojek has come under fire after a screenshot of a Facebook post from one of its executives expressing support for the LGBT community went viral.
