Indonesia and Malaysia have reached a deal on a joint venture to produce the first fully locally-made ASEAN vehicle for domestic use. Government representatives of the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Jakarta on Friday, The Star reports. The agreement is a follow up to Malaysia Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad’s visit to Indonesia last June. He said that Indonesia and Malaysia could revive plans to jointly develop a car to be sold in Southeast Asia. Meanwhile, The Edge Markets reported on Sunday that Malaysia’s Proton Holdings Bhd would proceed with its plan to create an Indonesian national car and subsequently explore the idea of creating an ASEAN regional car in collaboration with PT Adiperkasa Citra Lestari, said its chairman, Syed Faisal Albar.
