Indonesia lobbied visiting U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to keep the Southeast Asian nation on a list of countries that receive preferential trade terms, Reuters reported on Sunday, quoting Indonesia’s foreign and trade ministers. Amid an escalating trade war between the US and China, Indonesia is currently under the radar of President Donald Trump’s administration as he seeks to reduce deficits with major trade partners. Previously during the meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers in Singapore on Saturday, Pompeo pledged to provide nearly $300 million in new security funding for Southeast Asia, as China forges ahead with plans to bolster its engagement in the region. The pledge followed Pompeo earlier announcement on a $113 million infrastructure fund for Asia-Pacific economies as part of the White House’s Indo-Pacific blueprint.
