Mayor Ferdinand Bote was leaving a government compound in an SUV when motorcycle-riding gunmen shot him repeatedly with a pistol, Reuters reports. Bote became the 12th elected local official murdered since President Rodrigo Duterte unleashed a deadly anti-narcotics campaign after coming to power two years ago, although Bote was not linked to the drug trade. On Monday morning, Antonio Halili, a controversial Philippines mayor who gained notoriety for parading people arrested on drug offenses was shot and killed by a sniper at a flag-raising ceremony at Tanauan City Hall. Halili had been stripped of his supervisory powers over police in October 2017, due to a proliferation of illegal drugs in his city. It is unclear if the two deaths are linked.
