A Roman Catholic priest who was one of the earliest critics of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s deadly crackdown on drugs has gone into hiding due to what he says were signs he is being targeted by motorcycle-riding hitmen, the Associated Press reports. The alleged assassination attempt against the priest followed a very public feud between Duterte and the Roman Catholic Church as church leaders pushed back against criticism of priests. In July, the priests called for a national day of prayers and fasting in a motion against the President, who called God “stupid”. In July, Duterte said he was concerned over the “creeping influence” of the Catholic Church, while his spokesman accused the Church of working with Communist rebels to overthrow the government.
