Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad met in Putrajaya on Monday, with security concerns dominating the meeting. Malacañang said the two leaders discussed terrorism and transnational crimes. Duterte also thanked Malaysia for its support for Manila’s peace talks with Muslim rebels in Mindanao. Malaysia has served as the third-party facilitator between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front. Duterte arrived in Malaysia Saturday night in what is described as a “private trip” that included watching Senator Manny Pacquiao fought Lucas Matthysse for the World Boxing Association welterweight world title in Kuala Lumpur the day after.
