Lawyers and media professionals have urged the Malaysian government to clearly define what constitutes fake news in the Anti-Fake News Bill 2018. Saying that the Bill has “far-reaching implications” if passed, Lawyers for Liberty executive director Eric Paulsen said in a statement that the draft was “extremely vague”. Amnesty International calls the Malaysian fake news bill an “assault on freedom of expression” and “nothing but a blatant attempt to shield the government from peaceful criticism.” Prime Minister Najib Razak’s government tabled a bill in parliament on Monday outlawing “fake news”, with hefty fines and up to 10 years in jail, raising more concern about media freedom in the wake of a multi-billion dollar graft scandal.
