China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi has expressed confidence in the Malaysian government led by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, saying that the country will stay united and prosper under the new administration, The Straits Times reports. Mahathir is due to visit Beijing this month, where he will be welcomed as an “old friend” of China, according to Malaysia’s envoy to China, Daim Zainuddin. Previously in May, Mahathir said the “unfairness” of contracts for Beijing-backed infrastructure projects would be a key issue he would raise during his visit. The Finance Ministry this week called a halt to work on three projects: the US$20-billion East Coast Railway Link (ECRL) and two pipeline projects worth US$2.3 billion. Chinese state-owned firms are involved in all three projects.
