Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen has appointed his son-in-law as deputy national police chief, in a move apparently aimed at consolidating his power ahead of an election this year. Hun Sen also took umbrage with an article published by the Southeast Asia Globe in which three foreign observers commented on his health, challenging the trio to a golf or chess match to prove his vitality. Speculation surrounding the premier’s health has been a touchy subject for him, fueled by his regular visits to Singapore for health checkups. Hun Sen’s son, Hun Manet, who holds numerous senior positions in the military, including in Hun Sen’s Bodyguard Unit, is thought to be a strong contender to succeed Hun Sen when he leaves office.
