Brunei’s ruler announced a major shake-up of his cabinet on Tuesday, January 30, replacing six top ministers just over a couple of years after they were appointed. No immediate reason was given for the first cabinet reshuffle since October 2015. It follows the surprise dismissal of the health minister last December. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, the world’s second-longest reigning monarch, retained the key portfolios of prime minister, defence minister, finance minister and the minister of foreign affairs and trade. This reshuffle comes ahead of Brunei’s annual parliamentary session, held every March. Brunei’s ruler in October marked 50 years on the throne in spectacular style as he traveled through the streets in a gilded chariot before a ceremony at his golden palace.
