Human rights activists have condemned the weekend arrest across Indonesia of hundreds of West Papuan students and activists marking what separatists consider to be the restive Indonesian province’s historical date of independence, The Australian reports. Among those arrested was Australian Ronda Amy Harman. The protests led to hundreds of demonstrators being arrested and violent clashes with nationalist counter-protesters in some locations. Over the decades, the Indonesian government’s human rights record in the Papua region, formally known as Irian Jaya, has drawn widespread criticism. Pro-independence activists have been tortured, murdered or have gone missing, with no arrests or prosecutions, according to The New York Times.
