Malaysia’s Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that he will be contesting for party presidency, a decision seen as strengthening his stand in the new government, the Straits Times reports. PKR is one of the four parties in the ruling Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition, which pulled off a stunning victory in the recent general election. Deputy PKR Youth chief Dr Afif Bahardin said this would serve as a preparation for him to take over as the next prime minister, if he is indeed the candidate to succeed Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Previously, Anwar turned down a senatorship offer from Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. Anwar became a free man on May 16 this year after serving 39 months in jail over a sodomy conviction.
