A court in Vietnam convicted 46 former bankers and businessmen for corruption on Monday over a multi-million-dollar lending scam spearheaded by the once-powerful chairman of Vietnam’s Construction Bank, Rappler reports. “The violations of Danh and his accomplices caused damage of 6.1 trillion dong to the Vietnam Construction Bank, leaving adverse impacts on the banking system,” the VnExpress online newspaper cited the jury as saying. The figure is equivalent to nearly $262 million. Vietnam’s export-led economy has grown at an enviable 6% or so since 2012 and shows no signs of stopping. The Communist country is stepping up a crackdown on corruption among its numerous state-owned enterprises to ensure graft doesn’t spoil the economic miracle, analysts say.
