The 90-day pause in the trade war agreed between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, was greeted with relief around the world, but the dispute remains among the biggest risks to Southeast Asia’s economy next year, Nikkei Asian Review reports. The arrest of Meng Wanzhou, a top executive at Huawei, by Canadian police on behalf of the US Justice Department, has thrown the Trump’s trade negotiations into disarray, according to The New York Times. Huawei is being investigated for violating US trade sanctions against Iran. China warned Canada on Saturday that there would be severe consequences if it did not immediately release Huawei Technologies Co Ltd’s chief financial officer, calling the case “extremely nasty”.
