Indonesia on Monday sent rescuers fanning out across the holiday island of Lombok and evacuated more than 2,000 tourists after a powerful earthquake killed at least 98 people and damaged thousands of buildings, Agence France-Presse reports. The island of Lombok sits just east of Bali and both represent popular tourist destinations for people around the world. While people worked tirelessly to evacuate tourists and residents via ships and planes, rescue efforts on the island are slow and difficult, according to Forbes. Days before the earthquake hit Lombok on Sunday, Indonesian geologist Danny Hilman Natawidjaja had warned about strong aftershocks of magnitude following the previous earthquake in Lombok island on July 29. He also explained why the tremor was so deadly.
