Thailand’s 86-year-old Queen Mother Sirikit is being treated for influenza at a Bangkok hospital, the Royal Household Bureau said in a statement on Monday in a rare statement on her health, Reuters reports. The Queen is still widely respected in Thailand. Earlier this month, government workers, policy and military personnel in tourism destination Pattaya were required to wear the royal attire while the public were encouraged to wear blue to honor the queen’s birthday. The Thai monarchy serves as the bedrock of unity in Thailand, a country that was torn by a prolonged political turmoil that ended with a military coup in May 2014. Four years after the coup, Thailand is nowhere near what the ruling junta promised would be a rights-respecting, democratic country, writes Sunai Phasuk for the Human Rights Watch.
