Founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew declared in September 1965, just a month after Singapore had become independent: “Over 100 years ago, this was a mudflat, swamp. Today, this is a modern city. Ten years from now, this will be a metropolis. Never fear.” Some might have mistaken his words for political rhetoric meant to raise the spirits of the population of a tiny island city-state that had been ejected from its economic hinterland. However, his metropolitan vision more than came true as Singapore developed into a global city on the back of an expanding economy plugged into the rest of the world.
