Singapore Airlines will claim the crown of the world’s longest service by miles flown after it relaunched
its direct service between Singapore and New York on Thursday, CNBC reports. The airline has previously
operated the same route but abandoned it in 2013 due to high oil prices. The Independent reported that
with just two passenger classes – business and premium economy – the number of passengers has
dropped from 253, the average number onboard the carrier’s existing A350-900s, to just 161. Singapore
Airlines reported in July that its net profit fell by nearly 59 per cent in the first quarter, throwing a snag
in its major turnaround plan to stem losses.
