Singaporean social activist Jolovan Wham, 28, went on trial Monday, accused of illegally organizing a forum in which Joshua Wong, a prominent Hong Kong student activist, made a speech via Skype without a police permit, Associated Press reports. The organiser of the event, Community Action Network, is a non-governmental group concerned with freedom of expression in the city-state. Wong said the investigation against Wham highlighted how the authoritarian government of Singapore fears connections between social movements across East Asia. Wham visited Putrajaya in August and met Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad to talk about democracy, human rights, freedom of expression and freedom of information in the region.
