With Western unity on globalization and democratic norms fraying, Asia can no longer rely on developed-world leadership for global economic governance. ASEAN has preserved space for cooperation through RCEP but still faces the difficult task of managing US President Donald Trump’s erratic trade policy and the pressures from China’s manufacturing sector. Indonesia, as the economic and political center of ASEAN, is critical to anchoring regional openness — but it must deliver on its domestic reform agenda to be in a position to take up that mantle.
