The allure of Saudi Arabia for expatriate workers as a country of opportunity awash in petrodollars is vanishing. Gone are the days when thick gold necklaces, bracelets and rings were the trademark of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Saudi Arabia.

With the influx of Indians, Bangladeshis, Pakistanis and other foreign expatriates competing for a limited (and shrinking) job market in Saudi Arabia, good jobs and generous wages have become a rare commodity. Coupled with new government policies on taxation, immigration and employment, life for OFWs in Saudi Arabia has now become harder and more expensive.
