Researchers from the University of the Philippines-Los Baños (UPLB) identified bacterial species living in the soils of Mayon Volcano that showed potential antibiotic and anti-colorectal cancer properties. The group collected soil samples and isolated 30 bacteria, 13 of which showed varying antibiotic activities in test organisms that were known as pathogenic to humans or plants, such as those that could cause acute inflammatory diarrhea, pneumonia, and skin and soft tissue. Streptomyces sp. A1-08 is a specific bacterial isolate that has shown antibiotic activity against numerous potentially pathogenic microorganisms and anti-colorectal cancer potential. Raw compounds from this bacterial isolate can be purified to develop an exact anticancer drug. Once proven as a new species, the bacteria isolate will be renamed Streptomyces mayonensis A1-08. Project Leader and Assistant Professor at UPLB Kristel Mae Oliveros said that the team has high hopes in discovering novel species.
