At least one person was killed and two police officers are missing after suspected Papuan rebels fired at boats carrying voters and police returning from a polling station, Indonesian authorities said on Thursday, according to Channel News Asia. Previously, three people were killed and a child was wounded when separatist fighters in Indonesia’s Papua province opened fire on a small plane bringing in security personnel ahead of regional elections later this week, officials said on Monday. Indonesia, despite its largely successful transition to democracy in 1999 after decades of authoritarian rule, continues to be criticized for the plight of its easternmost region of Papua. Despite being some of Southeast Asia’s richest regions in terms of natural resources, Papuans remain among the country’s poorest.
