Myanmar said on Thursday a request by the International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor to seek jurisdiction over suspected deportations of Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar to Bangladesh was “meritless and should be dismissed”, Reuters reports. Judges at the court had asked Myanmar to respond to the request by July 27. The government has declined the request, saying the ICC has nothing to do with Myanmar, according to The Irrawaddy. The President’s Office called the ICC’s demand a deliberate attempt to increase international attention and pressure on the Myanmar government.  The world’s first permanent war crimes court does not have automatic jurisdiction in Myanmar because it is not a member state, but Bangladesh is a member and asked the court to look into the Rohingya crisis and a possible prosecution through them.
