Broken and obsolete computers, televisions, printers and household appliances containing circuitry, batteries and electronic components are haphazardly disposed of. The byproducts of this electronic waste (e-waste) — lead, mercury, cadmium and brominated flame retardants — leach into soil and water, harming the fragile ecosystem. Globally, e-waste levels will hit 82 million tons by 2030, faster than the 22 per cent that’s recycled, dumped, reprocessed and traded illegally to countries with weak inspection systems.
