Malaysia’s king has appealed for calm amid growing racial tensions in the Muslim-majority country after an electoral earthquake in May toppled the Malay-dominated coalition that had ruled the country for decades, Agence France-Presse reports. As the Malaysian king was set to deliver his opening speech in Parliament on Tuesday morning, about 100 protesters attempted to march there claiming that the king had been silenced by the appointment of non-Malays to top posts. Quoting a 46-page report by human rights group Pusat KOMAS, Free Malaysia Today reported that the rise in racial and religious discrimination during the election was not only worrying but also highlighted the inherent danger due to the overreach of bureaucratic Islamic institutions.
