Malaysia’s closely-watched 14th general elections will fall on May 9, with nomination day on Apr 28, the Election Commission announced on Tuesday. Polling will fall on a Wednesday, a departure from past elections. Former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad will be contesting under the banner Parti Keadilan Rakyat, after his own party, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, was provisionally disbanded a day before parliament was dissolved on last Saturday. Malaysia’s Election Commission (EC) has invited 14 countries to participate in the May 9 polls as foreign observers. Seven countries have so far agreed to send representatives to observe the 14th general election, the Malaysiakini news website reported. They were Indonesia, Thailand, Maldives, Timor Leste, Cambodia, Kyrgyzstan and Azerbaijan.
